BERGEN GUIDE
Bergen, Norway is known as the “HEART of the Fjords,” but is ALSO so much more than that. Bergen is a Cultural destination for food, music and nature, surrounded by the perfect combination of mountains, islands and sea.
Please note: recommendations are from 2019 and will be updated early 2024!
This guide is a selective curation of my favorite places in Bergen that has been developed to share with friends and family. I have lived in Washington DC, New York City, Hong Kong, and Beijing and have traveled extensively around the world. The first time I came to Bergen, it felt like I was always meant to live here. I moved to Bergen in 2014, and fall more in love with this place every day. I hope that this guide helps you get a glimpse of why I moved here. You can manage to experience a good deal of Bergen over a long weekend, but will not have any regrets spending more time here.
Weather. There is a saying in Bergen, “There is no bad weather, only bad clothes.” For one of the rainiest cities in the world, it doesn't really impact daily life here as long as you are well prepared for drastic changes in weather. Don’t be alarmed if you experience sun, hail, rain, snow, and fog within the same hour. Just be sure to bring lots of layers on your trip!
Prices. Norway is one of the most expensive countries in the world, so be sure to prioritize where you spend your money. Some of the nordic fine dining experiences are well worth the price, but good mid range / casual restaurants are hard to find and still cost a tremendous amount. I recommend balancing some of the select restaurants on my list with picnic lunches in the mountains. Hiking of course, is always free.
